Place:Garden Hutong
Character:Auntie Heng,98
“This leg and hand don’t work anymore,” Auntie Heng repeats with her bum leg and hand draped over the arm of the chair.
Auntie says her last name is hèng, but she doesn’t know which character, “I haven’t studied before.” Each day Auntie Heng sits on her armchair in this positionbasking in the sun for a while and then takes a slow walk around the block while carefully extending her can for balance.
Heng Ayi came to Beijing from Anhui to get care for her illness. Previously she was living with her second son in Beijing’s Tong County, and three months ago she came to live on Garden Hutong. The one-story house behind her armchair is her third son’s home. Her third son delivers gas to people’s homes while her eldest son sell fruit in the neighborhood. Almost all of Auntie Heng’s children have all left their hometown. Her fourth son is in Tianjian, and her daughter is in Shanghai. Her two granddaughters are about to graduate from college. Today, there are only three daughter-in-laws left back home to take care of the fields.
Auntie Heng is most concerned with getting over her malady, “My kids only take care of my illness. I don’t think of anything else”… “When it’s better no one will have to take care of me anymore.”
She asks us, “Do you think this leg can get better?” And we respond, “It will.” She laughs, “If you think it will get better then it will!”
At the end when we take a photo, she is a little embarassed, “Can I sit like this?”
As we prepare to go after taking the photo, she grasps her cane and pushes herself out of the armchair. Hobbling against her cane, she prepares for her walk, “The more I walk the better it will get!”
